For 2013, Utopias has been "blended with Samuel Adams Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF), a Belgian-style ale barrel-aged for at least nine months (and up to two years) in Hungarian oak tuns," per the company. This is a big shift for Utopias, and one which is supposed to bring a whole new dimension to the mega-beer.

At 28% ABV, Samuel Adams Utopias is reminiscent of a rich vintage Port, old Cognac, or fine Sherry with notes of dark fruit, subtle sweetness, and a deep rich malty smoothness. The 2019 vintage is a blend of batches, some aged up to 26 years in a variety of barrels. Unique to this year's release, was the use of Cognac and Madeira finishing barrels. So how does the Utopias 2013 vintage stack up against this year's release? Quite well. In fact, our tasting panel preferred the 2013 over the 2015 in a side-by-side tasting, but it was close. To be fair, the 2013 was originally opened in December of 2014, and therefore has aged a bit more, which may have smoothed out some of the edges.
