Gibson EB0 Electric Bass Guitar (1961) RetroFret

Like its precursor the EB-0 featured a solid compact mahogany neck and body and 30.5" scale length. Initially resembling the slab Les Paul Junior body style the EB-0 was then changed in late 1961 to reflect the sharp double cutaway aesthetics of its six-string solid body counterpart; the new Les Paul/SG. Equipped with a single Gibson.

This Gibson EB-0 was made in the USA in 1961. This is the first version slab bodied model - very similar to a LP Junior style. This bass shows play wear but no structural damage. It is all original. It has been pro-setup in our store and is in excellent playing condition. It weighs 8 lbs 11 oz and comes with a non original hard case.

The EB-3. The Gibson EB-3 was brought into production in 1961, along with the introduction of the SG-style body. It's pretty much the same as an EB-0, with the addition of a mini humbucker in the bridge position (along with the accompanying volume and tone knobs), plus a rotary tone knob (similar to a Varitone).

In 1961, the EB-0's body changed to the pointed-horn 'SG-style' shape -- once again, in lockstep with changes in the company's guitar line. This single-pickup 4-string and its double-pickup brother, the EB-3 (with 4-position 'Varitone' switch), were Gibson's most popular models for the ensuing decade" (Jim Roberts, American Basses, p. 74).

The Gibson EB-0 (usually pronounced, and sometimes written EBO) was first produced in early 1959, being shown at the Summer music trade fairs of that year priced at $180. It was announced to dealers in advance in the May/June issue of Gibson Gazette; Thrilling new EB-0 electric bass. The EB-0 basses produced from this time, and up until 1961.

Up for sale, a 1963 Gibson EB-0 in perfect working order, 100% original save for a refret and carved bone nut, and complete with a hardshell case. Introduced in 1959 in response to declining sales of the EB-1, the EB-0 originally came with a Les Paul Junior style body, quickly superseded by the SG style body (like the example seen here) in 1961.
